Recorded during Mabern’s 77th birthday celebration at Smoke Jazz Club, the spirited energy on these tracks is unmistakable. Mabern and his trio–bassist John Webber and drummer Joe Farnsworth–deliver a stylistically sweeping program of repertoire from classic blues and swinging standards to tender ballads and modal tempests. This album is dedicated to another Memphis, Tennessee piano giant and Mabern’s idol, Phineas Newborn, Jr., and it is an important addition to Mabern’s discography.
